USA Fall 2027: your month-by-month timeline

When to take your tests, apply, accept an offer, get your I-20 and book your F-1 visa if you want to start a US degree in Fall 2027.

For Fall 2027, most students should finish tests by December 2026, apply between November 2026 and February 2027, and start the visa as soon as the I-20 arrives. Deadlines vary by university, and many funding deadlines come earlier, so check each programme. An F-1 visa can be issued up to 365 days before your course start date, and you can enter the US up to 30 days before the start date on your I-20.

Which tests should I finish first?

  • Check whether each programme needs the GRE; many accept applications without it, and some recommend it.
  • Take your English test early enough to retake it before deadlines. Compare IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and Duolingo.
  • Aim to have every score in hand by December 2026.

When should I apply?

Apply as early as each university allows. Earlier applications have more room for scholarship and assistantship decisions, and you avoid the rush when transcripts and recommendation letters get delayed. Build a balanced list of dream, target and safe programmes, and budget with our MS in USA cost guide.

When can I get my I-20 and F-1 visa?

  • Your university issues the I-20 after you accept the offer and show your funds.
  • Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee on the official FMJfee.com site and keep the receipt for your interview.
  • An F-1 visa can be issued up to 365 days before your course start date, so book as soon as your documents are ready.
  • You can enter the US up to 30 days before the start date on your I-20.
  • Prepare with our F-1 interview questions and read the 2026 F-1 rule changes.

Common Fall 2027 mistakes

  • Waiting for a perfect test score and missing the early deadlines.
  • Applying only to very competitive programmes with no safe options.
  • Arranging the loan after the offer arrives instead of during applications. See our education loan guide.
  • Leaving visa preparation until the week of the interview.
