Where the consulate is, what you can and can't take inside, the two appointments every student has, and how to walk into your F-1 interview prepared.
The U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad is at Survey No. 115/1, Financial District, Nanakramguda, Hyderabad, Telangana 500032. F-1 students usually have two appointments: biometrics at a Visa Application Center (VAC) first, then the interview at the consulate. You can't take phones, bags, laptops or other electronics inside, and the consulate has no place to store them. F-1 applicants are also asked to set their social media accounts to public before applying.

Where is the US Consulate in Hyderabad?
The U.S. Consulate General Hyderabad is at Survey No. 115/1, Financial District, Nanakramguda, Hyderabad, Telangana 500032. It moved to this purpose-built campus in March 2023, so older blog posts that mention Begumpet or Paigah Palace are out of date. Plan your travel to the Financial District with a buffer, especially for morning slots.
What are the two appointments?
Most F-1 students attend two appointments, booked online through the official U.S. visa appointment service:
- Visa Application Center (VAC): your photo and fingerprints are taken. Use the VAC address printed on your appointment confirmation.
- Consular interview: at the consulate in Nanakramguda, usually on a later date. The officer decides on your F-1 visa.
- Before both, complete your DS-160, pay the visa fee and the SEVIS I-901 fee, and keep the confirmation pages.
The embassy accepts appointment requests only online, not by email. For scheduling problems, the official help desk is support-india@usvisascheduling.com.

- Your passport and appointment confirmation.
- DS-160 confirmation page.
- Your Form I-20, signed, and the SEVIS fee receipt.
- Proof of funds: education loan sanction letter, bank statements or sponsor documents. See our education loan guide.
- Academic documents: marks memos, degree certificate and test scores (GRE, IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo).
- Carry papers in an unsealed plastic bag, small cloth bag or zip folder, which are the only bags allowed.
What is not allowed inside the consulate?
According to the U.S. Embassy's security information, these items are not permitted, and there is no facility to store them:
- Mobile phones and any battery-operated or electronic device, including laptops, tablets, cameras, Bluetooth devices, flash drives and smartwatches.
- Large bags: backpacks, shoulder bags, briefcases, travel bags and suitcases.
- Food and drink, cosmetics (including perfume sprays and powder) and sealed envelopes or packages.
- Cigarettes, lighters, matches, sharp objects (scissors, nail files, pen knives) and weapons of any kind.
- Long umbrellas (longer than 40 cm when closed).
If you need a medically necessary device, bring an original letter from a medical professional, or you may be refused entry and have to reschedule.
Do I need to make my social media public?
Yes. The U.S. Embassy asks F, M and J visa applicants, among others, to set the privacy settings on all their social media accounts to public so their identity can be vetted. Do this before you apply, and make sure what you've posted matches your DS-160.
How do I prepare for the F-1 interview?
Most F-1 interviews last only two or three minutes. The officer usually asks about your study plans, your choice of university, how you will pay and your plans after graduating. Clear, honest answers that match your DS-160 and I-20 matter far more than memorised scripts.
